Selling on marketplaces: what their logistics require

Every marketplace has its manual: Miravia and Amazon measure days to dispatch; Decathlon demands packaging quality and tracking; Zalando, its own labels and free returns. All of it can be met from one stock if the provider recognises the channel and applies its rules.

The rules that repeat

Ship within 1 or 2 working days, valid tracking uploaded to the platform, neutral packaging or the marketplace’s branding, shipping label generated by the marketplace in some cases, returns accepted within their deadlines.

One stock, several channels

The danger is selling the last unit twice. With stock synced to all channels from the warehouse, and orders tagged by channel with their rules, marketplaces are sales channels, not new warehouses.

Selling on marketplaces: frequently asked questions

What happens if I miss a marketplace’s shipping deadlines?

Your seller metrics worsen and, with them, your visibility: marketplaces show offers that ship on time first. If delays keep happening, they can restrict your sales or suspend your account. That is why a fixed daily cut-off helps, with each channel’s orders flagged with their deadline from the moment they come in.

What is neutral packaging and when does a marketplace require it?

It is a box or mailer with no logos, flyers or advertising from another shop. Some marketplaces require it so the buyer does not receive another website’s promotion in their parcel. With a logistics provider, it is set up as a rule per channel and each order is packed with the right packaging automatically.

How does the tracking number reach the marketplace?

Ideally on its own: the provider generates the label, tracking flows back to the order in your store or in the marketplace and the platform marks it as shipped. Uploading it by hand leads to delays and miscopied numbers, and on many marketplaces an invalid tracking number counts against your metrics.
